Tillandsia is a genus of air plants that contains over 650 different varieties that can grow and thrive without soil. They are perennial flowering plants that are native to the warm climate of the southern United States, Mexico, and Central & Southern America. These plants require little water, low direct light, and lots of air circulation. Trichomes (tiny scales on their leaves) absorb water and nutrients directly from the air and can also help shade the plant from the sun. Air plants are epiphytes; any “roots” these plants have are only for clinging to various surfaces and they don’t depend on the host for survival. They make great companions for other plants such as orchids, cactus, and bromeliads.
